St. Katherine's Day School at Archbishop John Carroll HS
We at Carroll have many unique young ladies and gentlemen roaming our halls and studying in our classrooms. The most tender and dear to our hearts would overwhelmingly be the lively and gracious teens from St. Katherine's.
The special staff of instructors for this enchanting group has been graced with several Carroll grads. An elective course offers to Carroll students the chance to work one on one with the students at St. Katherine's.
An added bonus is that this allows the "Best Buddies" club at Carroll to have true meaning and reality. What life at Carroll was like before they joined us, we cannot remember!
What does this marshmallow have to do with St. Katherine's, you ask? The recent retreat held for all of the 9th grade students focused on the difficulties faced by many of the students in St. Katherine's. At one of the learning stations, Carroll students experienced what it is like to speak with a difficulty, and how difficult it is to understand what is being said.
First Cassie had to speak with the marshmallows in her mouth for simulation. Her partner, Dana, had to try to understand. Then it was time to reverse the roles.
In their words:
Cassie: It was very hard and confusing because I could perfectly tell what I was trying to say, but it was frustrating when someone couldn't understand me. While interviewing Dana I felt stupid because she was trying really hard to tell me. I felt worse when I had to keep asking her to repeat herself, almost like it was my fault she couldn't speak well, or it was my fault I couldn't get her to hear me.
Dana: It was difficult to say certain words because of the marshmallows, however some words were easier to say and hear. The worst part of this exercise was that when I couldn't understand Cassie, I felt bad.
They agree: We both are now more understanding of what the St. Katherine's people go through every day because unlike us, it is constant for them.
Erin McNulty and "Best Buddie" Rachel Currie
Erin spoke to the Freshman at the end of the day. She loves drama and plays, and participates in our Carroll plays. The Best Buddies group is involved with students from St. Katherine's on several levels. There are large group activities, such as the Prom. And there are one-on-one relationships, such as Rachel and Erin have. They attend movies and bowling events together. Rachel intends to pursue Communication Disorders as her college field.

Students from St. Katherine's welcome Christian Brothers who joined us Installation Day. Brother Richard Kestler (L) was both the last Christian Brother to be Principal of Carroll, and our first President. Brother Tim Ahern (M) is currently President of West Catholic. Over the years, Brother James Rieck (R) graced Carroll with his leadership in many capacities, the last being that of Principal. The legacy of the Christian Brothers remains with us always.
